How will you monitor me during my surgery? What are the potential complications I should know about?
Written by a board-certified, veteran anesthesiologist, The Anesthesia Fact Book puts a sense of control back in your hands and will make you a more informed and more confident patient. Answering the most common questions you may have about the anesthetic process, it includes essential information on:
How general anesthesia works and how it differs from twilight, spinal, or epidural anesthesia

Malignant Mesothelioma: Advances in Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Translational Therapies

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which the cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest (pleura) or abdomen (peritoneum). This lethal disease is associated with asbestos and has vast economic and legal implications. As the disease takes approximately twenty years to manifest itself in humans, a wave of diagnoses are expected in the near future. In the United States alone, an estimated 3,500 - 4,000 patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma annually, and it is estimated that over the next 35 years, more than 250,000 people in Western Europe will be diagnosed with the disease. Malignant Mesothelioma, edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, is a comprehensive text that relates science, pathology, clinical aspects and therapy for mesothelioma under one cover. The book integrates the newest research and advances in its discussions of the disease, covering such topics as carcinogenesis, epidemiology, benchwork, endoscopy, multimodality approaches and treatment. It includes discussions on novel approaches to mesothelioma, such as gene therapy, vaccination strategies and immunotherapy, as well as discussions on the legal and economic aspects of the disease. Over 200 illustrations round out the text. An invaluable reference for the medical oncologist, thoracic surgeon, radiation oncologist, pulmonologist, and benchworker interested in the disease.

Mesothelioma

This book should be of interest to those taking care of patients with mesothelioma, and would make a good addition to the library of professionals concerned with occupational lung disease.

Mesothelioma is a multiauthored book that aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, biology, diagnosis, and treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Edited by Drs. Bruce Robinson and Philippe Chahinian (from Perth, Australia, and New York City, respectively), the book brings together an international group of authors, most of whom are acknowledged experts on this disease. The selection of authors highlights the fact that mesothelioma, though an uncommon disease in many countries, is a considerable problem internationally. The strongest focus of the book is on the epidemiology of malignant pleural mesothelioma. Of the 20 chapters, 7 discuss the epidemiology and history of the disease in North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa, and Japan. One of these chapters chronicles how its author, Christopher Wagner, now deceased, and his colleagues established the link between exposure to asbestos and mesothelioma in South Africa circa 1960, despite initial skepticism from physicians elsewhere. Chapters devoted to the pathology of mesothelioma and to staging and surgery, gene therapy, photodynamic therapy, molecular pathogenesis (including the role of simian virus 40), and immunotherapy are well written, generally accurate, and thorough. A chapter on the medicolegal aspects of mesothelioma is a useful and highly relevant part of the book in the light of the large volume of litigation concerning asbestos that is related to mesothelioma. In contrast, chapters on clinical and palliative care and on imaging are not so well organized and lack detail. More attention could have been given to descriptions of the clinical and radiologic presentation according to disease stage, and the discussion of the comparative merits of computed tomographic and magnetic resonance imaging could have been enhanced with additional illustrations. The discussion of palliative care is cursory and would have benefited from an expert discussion of the methods of pain management. Although the role of pleuroscopy is addressed in a chapter by C. Boutin, a leader in this technique, current clinical practice in North America does not parallel this European experience, and some comment in that regard would have been beneficial. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy are grouped together in a single chapter written by Chahinian, a medical oncologist. A full chapter on radiation techniques and results written by a radiation oncologist would have been worthwhile. Finally, the organization of the chapters is puzzling. Chapters on epidemiology are placed at both the beginning and the end of the book, and the progression of the chapters in between is not entirely logical. As is true of all textbooks, this book is not absolutely current because of the inherent delay between the writing of the individual chapters and publication. Although a decade ago this delay would not have made a difference for a book dealing with mesothelioma, today it does. Advances in biology and clinical care are now occurring at a rapid pace in this disease, and therefore some of the information presented is subtly out of date. Overall, however, this book provides an excellent review for the practicing clinician. There are few textbooks addressing mesothelioma, and this one is a welcome addition to the literature.

Clinician's Handbook of Prescription Drugs

The busy healthcare practitioner's first reference for timely, accurate, and relevant drug information. Alphabetically organized by generic name (with trade names cross-referenced) and presented in an at-a-glance drug chart format. All entries are reviewed by an editorial advisory board of academic an clinical authorities.

Author's comments to this book

I would like to briefly explain our purpose in authoring this prescription manual. Every year, there are 7,000-10,000 deaths reported in the United States due to prescription errors. There are a number of reasons why the administration of medications has become so complex. These include polypharmacy (patients on many medications at the same time), the rapid volume and fast pace of today's clinical practices, the dizzying array of new and complicated drugs on the market and the loss of the "family pharmacist" that knows patients and their medications personally. Our main objective in creating the book is to provide the most essential information on commonly prescribed drugs in an easy to use, pocket sized(large pocket!)edition. This book is the only one of it's kind written by experts in pharmacology and clinical practice. I am an MD in the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago and have a busy clinical practice and also teach and do clinical research. My father, Dr. Seymour Ehrenpreis, is a PhD in Biochemistry and Pharmacology, who not only adds a basic scientist's knowledge to the information provided but has also taught thousands of medical students the art of drug prescription. Our Advisory Board consists of 17 clinicians ranging from Professors of Medicine in a variety of specialties from several medical schools, a physician's assistant with the US Army, a microbiologist and a clinical psychologist. These individuals have all worked carefully to glean the most important and essential information needed to safely and properly prescribe about 500 drugs including over 900 trade names from a clinician's prospective. Areas covered for each entry include drug name, brand names, mechanism of action, susceptible organisms(for antibiotics, doses and indications, adjustment of dose in liver and kidney diseases, the elderly and children, timing with meals, use during pregnancy and lactation (with recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics when available),contraindications, warnings and precautions, very detailed advice to patients for avoiding adverse reactions and other drug related problems, common and serious side effects, clinically important drug interactions, parameters for the clinicians to monitor to avoid complications and finally, editorial comments. The editorial comments are "pearls of wisdom" that the authors or our Advisory panel have added to assist the prescriber. Aside from the aforementioned advantages of this book,a number of drugs which are either not included in or are only briefly mentioned in the PDR 2001 edition are described in detail in our book. Many of these drugs, such as IV nitroglycerine, dopamine, and methylprednisolone to name just a few, are commonly prescribed. Our book provides a means of looking these up and making sure that they are prescibed correctly. Eli D Ehrenpreis MD Chicago, Illinois

Color Atlas of Immunocytochemistry in Diagnostic Cytology

In recent years, cytology has played an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of disease, particularly those of neoplastic origin. It is not unusual for cytologic specimens to be the only diagnostic samples available from patients with cancer. Many ancillary tests traditionally performed on histologic material are now being performed on cytologic specimens. One such technique, immunocytochemistry (ICC), has already proved to be important in diagnostic tumor pathology. This atlas examines the value of ICC as well as its limitations in contemporary cytology. Methods have been refined and high-quality reagents are now available. As a result, technical problems no longer present a major concern in this field. This volume will briefly address the technical aspects of ICC by providing practical advice for the users and analytical aspects of ICC, including correct selection of markers for specific differential diagnoses and incorporation of results in final cytologic interpretation; illustrate the utilization of ICC in the resolution of some common diagnostic problems in fine needle aspiration and body cavity fluid cytology. ICC of undifferentiated malignant neoplasms, carcinomas of unknown origin, and most importantly its utilization in specific differential diagnoses that are based on cytomorpholoy and patient’s clinical history is also discussed. This practical handbook will allow for quick reference in the selection and interpretation of markers in specific differential diagnostic in the daily practice of diagnostic cytology.

Diagnostic Ultrasound: Imaging and Blood Flow Measurements

Ultrasound imaging is one of the most important and widely used diagnostic tools in modern medicine, second only to the conventional x-ray. Although considered a mature field, research continues for improving the capabilities and finding new uses for ultrasound technology while driving down the cost of newer, more complicated procedures such as intravascular ultrasound. Diagnostic Ultrasound: Imaging and Blood Flow Measurements presents new developments, fundamental physics, instrumentation, system architecture, biological effects of ultrasound, and clinical applications that reflect this initiative. Keeping mathematical derivations to a minimum, this book begins with an overview of the field, the strengths and weaknesses of the technology, and its role relative to other imaging modalities. The book proceeds to describe the fundamental physics involved, a detailed examination of the transducer, conventional imaging approaches, and Doppler measurements. The following chapters explore new developments such as flow, displacement, contrast, harmonic, intracavity, and 4-D imaging. The author concludes by reviewing current status and standards on bioeffects along with a unique chapter on measuring ultrasonic properties of tissues that can be found nowhere else. Emphasizing the engineering and signal processing aspects of ultrasound technology rather than taking a clinical perspective, Diagnostic Ultrasound: Imaging and Blood Flow Measurements encourages and enables further advances in this established yet dynamic field.

Mechanical Circulatory Support (Landes Bioscience Medical Handbook (Vademecum))

Mechanical circulatory support is a well established therapeutic modality for treating refractory heart failure in patients with postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock, and approved cardiac transplant recipients who fail hemodynamically prior to the availability of a donor heart. In the near future, the indications for use of mechanical blood pumps may well expand to include temporary support in patients with acute myoicarditis, and for permanent implantation as an alternate to cardiac transplantation.
This handbook is a concise, portable compendium that focuses on the clinical use of mechanical blood pumps. All aspects of mechanical circulatory support is addressed, including patient selection, preoperative preparation, operative management including surgical implantation techniques, anesthetic considerations and conduct of cardiopulmonary bypass, postoperative management including complication associated with blood pump use and long-term care and rehabilitation.

Ultrasound for Surgeons (Vademecum) [ILLUSTRATED]

In recent years, technology has revolutionized the practice of surgery. As part of this change, surgeon-performed ultrasound has become one of themost integral parts of the surgeon's clinical practice. It is not surprising to observe this current surge of interest in ultrasound by general surgeons because surgeons are highly motivated to provide the best possible care for their patients, including the use of the latest technologic advances in diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, ultrasound equipment is compact, affordable and user-friendly so that extensive training is not required to master focused ultrasound techniques. Cost containment initiatives by patients, clinicians and third-party payers have encouraged the use of modalities, such as ultrasound, that save time and money. Considering the unique qualities of ultrasound -noninvasive, portable, rapid and easily repeatable, ultrasound is especially suitable to the surgeon's practice. The FAST has replaced central venous pressure measurements for the detection of hemopericardiumand diagnostic peritoneal lavage for the detection of hemoperitoneum. Bedside ultrasound detects a pleural effusion so well in critically ill patients that fewer lateral decubutis X-rays are ordered. Ultrasound directed biopsy of breast lesions is a common office procedure. Laparoscopic ultrasound allows for tumor staging without formal celiotomy while ultrasound is an adjunct tomany hepatic and pancreatic procedures. Endoscopic and endorectal ultrasoundhave added a new dimension to the assessment and treatment of many gastrointestinal lesions. Color-flow duplex imaging and endoluminal ultrasound have significantly expanded the diagnostic and therapeutic aspects ofvascular imaging.

One Year of Hard Work -- 680 Best of Fives with Neurology Themes / Syllables AND MRCPI Part II General Medical Examination Notes

You will find multiple choice questions, best of fives, best of many, and single line questions in neurology. Chapter 3 has photographic materials (CT scans, MRIs, MRVs, Plain X-ray films, patient's photos, echocardiography, ECG, and EEG). The answers have comprehensive up-to-date explanation. The questions covers most of the MRCPUK/MRCPI examination syllabus (and its most commonly encountered themes), both for part I and II. It is the only free neurology self-assessment book on the web, not just for MRCPUK/MRCPI examinations, but also for any neurological/medical written exam (e.g., Neurology or Internal Medicine Boards, FRCPC, FRACP, USMLE, PLAB, TRAS...etc).

.

Reading neurology comprehensively for the MRCP examination is a valuable method of getting and securing a full mark in that branch; yet, many MRCP candidates are still reluctant to it. Neurology and neurosciences may have some overlap with psychiatry and basics and extending the studying to many subspecialties at once may distract the student and have a counterproductive effect. Many MRCP candidates depend heavily on commercial MRCP BOF books, rely on past examination themes, and avoid textbooks. Although this might be of help in passing the examination (usually on the verge of failure) and making the preparation time shorter, I think this method will not make the candidate practically efficient during every day practice after clearing the examination parts.I would like to stress that the MRCP examinations do not concentrate on rare subjects and topics, like details of hereditary spinocerebellar ataxias, or the treatment options of high grade gliomas, or the clinical features of congenital muscular dystrophy. Instead, they cover important clinical scenarios that are likely to be seen during every day practice.

Best of Fives for MRCP UK and Ireland part I Examinations with ECG

Studying medicine thoroughly is not an easy job, especially if time is running and you are thinking about the pass/fail mark of the examination instead. Many candidates depend heavily on BOFs and MCQs books, as these are easy to read and review; yet, the information they give is usually compacted and bypasses many detailed and important aspects. The two main questions asked by almost all candidates are:
-->What books to read?
-->And how much time do I need to be ready for the examination?
The MRCP UK part I does not differ from that of Ireland, except that the Irish paper I has 50 questions in a true/false question format; paper II is similar in both and covers medicine in short best of five scenarios. The Irish BOF paper may, at times, include scanned pictures, hematology slides, photos …etc, ranging from 7-10 in number; this is not true in the UK counterpart. Many candidates find the Irish part more difficult as they should solve two papers within a 3-hour time window. The examination syllabus and "themes" are the same. The pass mark for the Irish part is between 70-72% (according to examination diet), while that of UK is between 58-62%! The results are published (online) after 28 days in both. The Irish part is more expensive (in all parts) and has a limited number of overseas centers (the bulk of the candidates and centers are in Ireland, but it is expanding gradually outside Ireland). The 3rd edition of this book covers the most important themes to read and has many questions from past examinations; many questions were updated, added, and re-edited. The book is divided in 2 volumes (720 MCQ'S).
ECG questions are integral part of the MRCP/MRCPI examinations. Familiarity with certain ECG scenarios and clinical problems is the key to be successful in these examinations.

Radiology for Surgeons

Imaging is now an almost routine part of the first-line investigation of many patient conditions and, as such, it is vital that the surgeon has an understanding of how to rapidly interpret and diagnose all forms of images (plain film, CT, MRI etc.). Radiology for Surgeons is a superbly illustrated guide to interpreting all forms of images, aimed specifically at the trainee general surgeon. Information is presented by organ / system, and each 'case' is illustrated with high quality halftones and superb gross colour specimen illustrations where necessary to highlight underlying pathology. All 'cases' follow a consistent format, which aids understanding and rapid access to and assimilation of information.

A Primer of Chemical Pathology

This book has been written primarily for medical students and junior doctors in clinical practice, but would also be a useful reference for postgraduate students in chemical pathology (clinical biochemistry), laboratory scientists, pathologists and medical laboratory technologists. It covers the field of chemical pathology, the biochemical basis of disease, and provides a basic understanding of the relationship between abnormal biochemical test results and disease states. A rational approach to proper selection and interpretation of biochemical investigations is adopted for each organ system or analyte covered in the 28 chapters. Emphasis is placed on areas and problems most commonly met with in clinical practice. Meant primarily as an introductory study book to the subject rather than as a reference text, the materials have been presented in a clear, condensed format to aid the study process. The written text is amply supplemented with relevant illustrations.
