The Kidney and Hypertension

Hypertension is common in patients with kidney disease for a number of reasons, three of which are salt retention, inappropriate action by the renin-angiotensin system and overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system. Of all causes of hypertension, renal artery stenosis (narrowing) has attracted considerable attention, since it is was once thought to be a rare cause of hypertension and yet, now, it is clear that it is the most common cause of secondary hypertension. Renal patients suffer more resistant hypertension and require thorough investigation for renal disease. George Bakris and his peers examine all aspects of hypertension in the renal patient. This is an essential guide to the effective management of the renovascular patient.

Cancer Risk Assessment: Chemical Carcinogenesis, Hazard Evaluation, and Risk Quantification

Learn the core concepts and step-by-step methods for assessing cancer risk

With its focus on quantitative methods and weight of the evidence, Cancer Risk Assessment enables readers to accurately assess human cancer risk from exposure to chemical agents, including solvents, metals, mixtures, and nanoparticles. Moreover, the book helps readers understand the link between cancer risk and the basic toxicology and biology of cancer.

Each chapter of this contributed work has been written by one or more leading international experts. Their contributions integrate a comprehensive review of the scientific literature with their own personal hands-on experience as well as their knowledge of current regulations and testing guidelines. With the authors' guidance, readers can better analyze toxicological data in order to reduce the uncertainties in chemical-related cancer evaluations and risk assessments.

The book begins with an overview of cancer risk assessment, science policy, and the regulatory framework for industrial chemicals and biocides. Next, all the core concepts, skills, and methods needed to perform cancer risk assessments are covered in detail, including:

* Key fundamentals in cancer biology, chemical carcinogenesis, hormesis, and experimental evidence of thresholds for genotoxic carcinogens

* Testing guidelines and regulations for in vitro and in vivo genotoxicity testing

* Evaluation of toxicological data and its relevance to hazard evaluation and cancer risk estimation

* Methods for quantifying cancer risk, including quantitative structure-activity relationships, physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling, "-omics," and computational toxicology

Readers of Cancer Risk Assessment not only learn to perform state-of-the-science cancer risk assessments, but also gain valuable skills and knowledge in the more general fields of toxicology and risk assessment.

Introduction to Histopathology

The primary aim of this book is to provide guidance in the study of histologic slides of the pathology course. For this reason we are following the outlines of the pathology course; the topic is divided into two parts, a general and a special pathology section. The book also presents examples of histologic slides which are part of the pathology course for medical and dental students. We are introducing pathologic entities which are characteristic and should assist in more effective learning of the theoretical part of the course. However, space does not permit the presentation of many important lesions. The explanatory text includes the definition of individual pathologic entities, a brief description of the gross findings followed by an analysis of the m icroscopic changes, sometimes in greater detail than seen on the microphotographs.

Practical Paediatric Problems: A Textbook for MRCPCH

The problem based approach of the book presents the reader with a slightly different perspective from that found in the traditional system based textbook. Junior doctors deal with and learn from dealing with children with problems - so this textbook with its alternative approach will be a useful additional source of advice and help to many starting off their careers in paediatrics.

This innovative text, modelled on the current RCPCH syllabus for paediatric training, provides all the information that the senior house officer and specialist registrar in paediatrics will need during training and when preparing for the MRCPCH examination. A series of chapters discussing general principles in paediatric medicine is followed by a section covering the problems associated with the major body systems. Each chapter within this latter section is divided into three elements. Element A covers the background basic science to the particular problems being discussed in the chapter, including basic embryology and anatomy, biology and physiology. A description of the techniques involved in investigation where these will be critical to the diagnoses that follow is also included here; Element B presents the core system problems for the chapter. Tables are provided to summarise the different causes, classifications and differential diagnoses, clinical features, key investigations, therapeutic options and outcomes. Concise supporting text provides more detailed information where appropriate. Selected short case histories are also included to highlight the key issues covered in the chapter. Element C is a concise bibliography, incorporating a short series of key primary papers and review articles and suggestions for further reading. Subjects covered under general principles include developmental paediatrics, behavioural issues and learning difficulties, community paediatrics and clinical pharmacology. Clinical chapters include the respiratory, cardiovascular, endocrine and all other body systems. Haematology, oncology, psychiatry, surgical problems and tropical paediatric medicine are also covered here. All chapters contain up-to-date and appropriate information written by practising paediatricians who are each acknowledged specialists in their own field. This textbook will fast become an indispensable guide to the specialty for all trainee paediatricians in preparation for the MRCPCH examination and beyond.

Techniques and options are described in sufficient detail to allow any surgeon who has limited experience of a particular procedure to proceed with confidence and safety. The text is thus also valuable for qualified surgeons practicing in smaller hospitals worldwide where specialized advice may not otherwise be available. This ninth edition has been fully updated, with many chapters entirely rewritten. New contributing authors bring their particular experience in sub-specialties such as vascular medicine, orthopaedics and trauma, all of which overlap with the work of the general surgeon. Farquharson's Textbook of Operative General Surgery remains an unrivalled aid to training in operative surgical procedures, and an invaluable ready reference for the more experienced surgeon working in a variety of settings and locations.

Pocket Atlas of Radiographic Anatomy

Despite the introduction of digital radiography, the process of obtaining and evaluating radiographic images has not changed significantly in recent years, nor has the importance of good knowlegde of the anatomic details of conventional radiographs. This book is a case in point. We were very pleased with the wide distribution of the first edition, which has been an additional incentive to improve a number of details, include even better images, replace some of the drawings, and include a few new radiographs. The structure of the second edition also srickly follows that of Normal Findings in Radiology and Pocket Atlas of Radiographic Positioning. Our intention in this is to present clearly and concisely each repective chapter of conventional diagnostic radiography and to avoid unnecessary repetition. At the same time, we give the reader the opportunity to examine different aspects of the same material with the same degree of clarity, which may prove important on another occasion. We have employed a consistent style and the same radiographys to structure the material and make it more readily accessible for reading, learning, or reference purposes.

Protocols for High-Risk Pregnancies - July 2010 Edition

Pregnancies compromised by disease, trauma, substance abuse, and other factors are not uncommon. They clearly demand special attention from the obstetrician, obstetric nurse, primary care physician and others. Through three successful editions, Queenan has provided these audiences with a concise yet complete guide to managing pregnant patients and fetuses at risk. For the fourth edition, Dr Queenan has proposed replacing up to a third of the 96 contributors to get some "new blood" into the book. He has invited more contributions from European authors in order to better cater to an international readership. The book will, however, retain the popular "protocols" theme, in which very brief chapters on the spectrum of HRP topics provide quick summaries of a problem and diagnostic and therapeutic steps to manage it. Every chapter will be revised carefully to reflect the latest thinking on the best approach to pregnant patients with risks like tuberculosis, STDs, bleeding, pre-eclampsia, etc. The many quick reference tables and charts will be updates as, of course, will the brief bibliographies accompanying each chapter. This new edition will provide increased coverage of IUGR, Pre-eclampsia, teratology and genetics. New chapters will be introduced on doppler ultrasound, nuchal translucency and also on AIDS in pregnancy.Furthermore the fourth edition will be evidence-based. The new editor, Katherine Spong, is a guru of evidence-based medicine and as well as her role as one of the editors of the American journal: Obstetrics and Gynaecology, controls the foetal medicine programme at the National Institute of Health in Washington.

Experience and evidence fused for best-practice management of high-risk pregnancies

High-risk pregnancies present life-threatening challenges to two of your patients: the mother and her fetus. The direct, exemplary guidance in Protocols for High-Risk Pregnancy enables you to:

* better understand your patients' conditions

* devise optimum management strategies

* maximize the outcome and minimize the complications for both the mother and her fetus

To enhance clinical relevance, each protocol is written as if the patient were present. Evidence to support an intervention is given where it exists. The authors' experience provides additional wise counsel. Key references provide the springboard for a deeper understanding of a topic. All protocols have been updated. New protocols follow the successful formula of previous editions.

By establishing a system of grading throughout the book and appropriate coding through the use of special icons, the authors highlight immediately to the reader those interactions that are likely to give rise to life-threatening reactions and must therefore be completely avoided in addition to other, less threatening but nonetheless important interactions to be aware of.

Presented in tabular form for ease of reference, the book also provides a brief summary of the mechanism underlying a particular interaction, alternative drugs lacking the same reactions that may be considered and instructions for monitoring patients when adverse effects may occur. All advice is supported by the appropriate evidence, graded according to a university accepted system. Drug naming follows the recommendations of INN. Throughout, interactions with OTC medications, herbal remedies and dietary supplements are also considered.

Fundamentals of Digital Imaging in Medicine - Febuary 2010 Edition

In general, image processing texts are intended for students of engineering and computer science, and there is little written at all on the specific requirements of medical image processing. Students of medical radiation science (Diagnostic radiography, Nuclear medicine, Radiation therapy) usually have minimal mathematical and computer science training and find the available texts incomprehensible. A text that explains the principles of image processing in minimally-mathematical language is needed for these students. Contrary to the claims of some textbook authors, the vast majority of technologists that process images do not need to understand the mathematics involved, but would nevertheless benefit from a thorough understanding of the general process.

Nowadays, there is tremendous interest in an integrated imaging approach to urogenital diseases. This interest is tightly linked to the recent technological advances in ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and nuclear medicine. Significant improvements in image quality have brought numerous clinical and diagnostic benefits to every medical specialty.

This book is organized in nine parts and twenty-seven chapters. The first six chapters review the normal macroscopic and radiological anatomy of the urogenital system. In subsequent chapters, urogenital malformations, lithiasis, as well as infectious and neoplastic disorders of the kidneys, bladder, urinary collecting system, and male and female genitalia are extensively discussed. The pathologic, clinical, and diagnostic (instrumental and not) features of each disease are described, with particular emphasis, in neoplastic pathologies, on primitive tumors and disease relapse. The statics and dynamics of the pelvic floor are addressed as well and there is a detailed presentation of state-of-the-art interventional radiology.

The volume stands out in the panorama of the current medical literature by its rich iconography. Over 1000 anatomical illustrations and images, with detailed captions, provide ample evidence of how imaging can guide the therapeutic decision-making process.
