Critical Decisions in Emergency and Acute Care Electrocardiography

This scenario-based text provides answers to urgent and emergent questions in acute, emergency, and critical care situations focusing on the electrocardiogram in patient care management. The text is arranged in traditional topics areas such as ACS, dysrhythmia, etc yet each chapter is essentially a question with several cases illustrating the clinical dilemma – the chapter itself is a specific answer to the question.
This is a unique format among textbooks with an ECG focus. The clinical scenarios cover the issues involved in detecting and managing major cardiovascular conditions. Focused, structured discussion then solves these problems in a clinically relevant, rapid, and easy to read fashion.
This novel approach to ECG instruction is ideal for practicing critical care and emergency physicians, specialist nurses, cardiologists, as well as students and trainees with a special interest in the ECG.

Introduction to the Principles of Medical Imaging

The introduction of X-ray computed tomography (CT) 25 years ago revolutionized medical imaging; X-ray CT itself provided the first clear cross-sectional images of the human body, with substantial contrast between different types of soft tissue. The enduring legacy of CT is, however, the spur that it gave to the subsequent introduction of tomographic imaging techniques into diagnostic nuclear medicine and the extraordinarily rapid development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) over this period.
This book is a non-mathematical introduction to the principles underlying modern medical imaging, taking tomography as its central theme. The first three chapters cover the general principles of tomography, a survey of the atomic and nuclear physics which underpins modern imaging, and a review of the key issues involved in radiation protection. The subsequent chapters deal in turn with X-ray radiography, gamma imaging, MRI and ultrasound. The clinical role of diagnostic imaging is illustrated in the final chapter through the use of fictional clinical histories. Three appendices provide a more mathematical background to the tomographic method, the principles of mathematical Fourier methods, and the mathematics of MRI.
This revised edition includes new introductory sections on the relevant physics of molecules in general, and water, in particular. Every chapter now has a table of key points with cross-references to other sections. Several figures have also been revised.
The book is intended to provide a broad introductory background to tomographic imaging for two groups of readers: the physics or engineering undergraduate thinking of specializing in medical physics, and the medical student or clinician using tomographic techniques in research and clinical practice.

A Textbook of Postpartum Hemorrhage

The objective of this book is to bring together within a single volume the most up to date information about the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of postpartum hemorrhage. Whilst much has been published on the subject a truly comprehensive synthesis of this kind has never before been attempted. This volume sets out, therefore, to provide physicians with an overall clinical perspective that has hitherto been unavailable. The volume is essentially practical in orientation addressing specific issues that confront any obstetrician responsible for the management of postpartum hemorrhage. In particular it features new surgical techniques that have been shown to be markedly successful and straigh forward to apply, and which have clear advantages over emergency hysterectomy in many instances. Other important issues that are reviewed in detail include causation, prevention, therapy for atonic and non-atonic conditions, and long term consequenses Written by an international team of specially invited experts, this book should meet a genuine need. In particular it is hoped it will contribute in a practical way to management of postpartum hemorrhage in developing countries where scarcity of resources may be compounded by a lack of clinically reliable information about the last therapeutic advances.

Women & Heart Disease

Despite media attention and public awareness, recent advances in pharmaceutical and medical developments, heart disease in women is under-diagnosed, under-treated, and under-managed. Many women fail to present in the clinic when symptomatic, because of responsibilities at home or at work. Often the first presentation follows a cardiac event. Women are excluded from many clinical trials regardless of age or cardiac history, simply because most trials are aimed at male patients. This best-selling, updated title, aimed at changing this treatment of women's cardiac issues, covers all aspects of female cardiovascular disease. It is required reading for all practitioners who assess female patients.

Atlas of Pelvic Floor Ultrasound

Ultrasound has replaced X-ray as the main imaging modality for the diagnosis of pelvic floor disorders in the female. Most recent developments - volume contrast, speckle reduction and multi-slice imaging - have markedly enhanced spatial resolution and ease of use, with the result that ultrasound now enables cost-effective and non-invasive demonstration of bladder neck and pelvic organ mobility, vaginal, urethral and levator ani function and anatomy, and anorectal anatomy.
"Atlas of Pelvic Floor Ultrasound" provides an introduction to pelvic floor imaging, as well as a resource to be used during initial and more advanced practice. Thanks to the support of GE Medical Ultrasound, the integration of 4D View software and volume data for offline analysis on the accompanying DVD (Not Included) provides a simple and convenient means to train pattern recognition and quantitative analysis.
This atlas is an invaluable resource for gynecologists, urogynecologists, female urologists, sonologists, radiologists, and physiotherapists.

Medical MasterClass (MRCP) Interactive Cases CD 1

The two Medical Masterclass CD-ROMs contain a total of 60 interactive case scenarios each. Each case study takes you through the full process of patient examination and history taking, differential diagnosis, ordering of tests, procedures (costs and time scales are included), management and final diagnosis. Each case is submitted for immediate expert comment and notes accompany the correct diagnosis in each case.
Example Process
*The opening screen invites the user to select a case from the list of case descriptions.
*Once the case has been selected, the learning objectives are defined and further instructions are given.
*The user is given a brief history and is able to assemble a more detailed history via menu options.
*A full patient examination can be undertaken.
*Once the history and examination procedures are complete, the user is asked to make initial diagnosis.
*Tests can be ordered. Time scales and costs are given for tests with immediate results.
*Treatment procedures can be ordered on the basis of test results. A summary of progress is given in response to the treatment ordered.
*A summary of the results of all tests and procedures ordered is given together with the cost.
*Based on all the assembled information, the user is asked to make a final diagnosis.
*The case study concludes with a description of the correct diagnosis or diagnoses and the user is marked. The time in which the case study was completed is recorded.
*The format is remarkably close to real life: you must start making management decisions before all of the test results are available. All case scenarios are fully illustrated and include self-assessment questions, and most cases include patient video materials.

This is the authoritative guide to prescribing, dispensing and administering medicines for all healthcare professionals. Nobody working in healthcare can afford to be without the latest edition of "BNF". Compiled with the advice of clinical experts and continually updated to reflect the latest evidence from all credible sources worldwide, this essential reference provides up-to-date guidance on prescribing, dispensing, administering, and monitoring medicines. Not only does the "BNF" include the widely accepted framework for the drug management of common diseases, it also includes details of medicines prescribed in the UK, with special reference to their uses, cautions, contraindications, side-effects, dosage and relative costs. This allows treatment to be tailored to the individual needs of each patient. Updated in print every six months by an expert team of pharmacists, with guidance and validation from a network of leading clinicians, and oversight by a Joint Formulary Committee with representatives from all spheres of clinical practice. The "BNF" reflects current best practice as well as legal and professional guidelines relating to the use of medicines. As a result it is used widely as a touchstone reference, and cited in Parliaments and courts as a source of authority. It is available online as part of Medicines. It is complete, on PDA and on CD-ROM for intranets. International relevance: "BNF" and "BNFC" are the gold standard of drug information in English-speaking countries. They are used for constructing national formularies in other countries and to support regulatory work. They provide essential information when treating patients who have been prescribed medicines in the UK.
