Statins: Indications and Uses, Safety and Modes of Action

This book focuses on statins which are a relatively new group of drugs used to lower blood cholesterol levels. A high cholesterol level increases a person's risk of having a heart attack or stroke. The long-term use of statins reduces the risk of such an event and can increase the life expectancy of people with a history of heart disease. The statins work by blocking an enzyme in the body that is involved in the production of LDL cholesterol, especially in the liver. This enzyme is known as HMG coenzyme A reductase. The statins are the most effective group of drugs for lowering the levels of LDL cholesterol in the body. Potential side-effects include muscle cramps and gastrointestinal upsets. These are usually resolved on temporarily lowering the dose. Liver enzyme derangements may occur, which generally return to normal after briefly discontinuing the drug. Some report headaches. Other side-effects occur rarely.

Hypertension and Stroke: Pathophysiology and Management (Clinical Hypertension and Vascular Diseases) - November 2010 Edition

This timely volume addresses the intimate pathophysiologic relationship between hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Hypertension is one of the most important global public health challenges, and its relationship to stroke and other catastrophic cerebrovascular diseases is an area of growing understanding. In this outstanding book, the editors and authors clearly and concisely synthesize our developing knowledge and place epidemiologic and physiologic information into a practical clinical context. Comprehensive chapters present the evidence supporting strategies for stroke prevention and care, including blood pressure lowering therapies, anti-coagulation, and management of other cerebrovascular risk factors. In addition to prescriptive measures for first stroke prevention, the book illuminates current regimens for care immediately after acute stroke and for the prevention of recurrent stroke. A unique section is dedicated to the exploration of the interaction between elevated blood pressure and brain function and cognition. The concluding chapter provides a resource towards optimizing the organization of stroke care. Hypertension and Stroke is of great utility for specialists in neurology and cardiovascular medicine and a valuable practical resource for all physicians caring for older adults and hypertensive patients.

Interventional Radiology Procedures in Biopsy and Drainage (Techniques in Interventional Radiology) - November 2010 Edition

The Techniques in Interventional Radiology series of handbooks describes in detail the various interventional radiology procedures and therapies that are in current practice. The series comprises four titles, which in turn cover procedures in angioplasty and stenting, transcatheter embolization and therapy, biopsy and drainage and ablation. Forthcoming are volumes on pediatric interventional radiology and neurointerventional radiology. Each book is laid out in bullet point format, so that the desired information can be located quickly and easily. Interventional radiologists at all stages, from trainees through to specialists, will find this book a valuable asset for their practice. Interventional Radiology Procedures in Biopsy and Drainage presents the full array of operations using these techniques. The book is split into two sections – one dedicated to biopsy procedures and the other to drainage procedures. Dr. Debra Gervais is Director of Pediatric Imaging and Associate Director of Abdominal Imaging and Intervention at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, USA. Dr. Tarun Sabharwal is a Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital, London, UK.

A Dictionary of Neurological Signs - November 2010 Edition

The first two editions of A Dictionary of Neurological Signs were very well-received by readers and reviewers alike. Like those editions, this Third Edition, updated and expanded, can be almost as well described in terms of what the book is not, along with details about what it is. The Dictionary is not a handbook for treatment of neurological disorders. While many entries provide the latest treatment options, up-to-the-minute therapies are not discussed in bedside level detail. The Dictionary is not a board review book because it is not in Q&A format but could easily serve in that capacity since each entry is a fairly complete snapshot of a specific disorder or disease. The Dictionary is an alphabetical listing of commonly presenting neurological signs designed to guide the physician toward the correct clinical diagnosis. The Dictionary is focused, problem-based, concise and practical. The structured entries in this practical, clinical resource provide a thumbnail of a wide range of neurological signs.

Each entry includes:

• A definition of the sign
• A brief account of the clinical technique required to elicit the sign
• A description of the other signs which may accompany the index sign
• An explanation of pathyophysiological and/or pharmacological background
• Differential diagnosis
• Brief treatment details Where known, these entries also include the neuroanatomical basis of the sign.
A Dictionary of Neurological Signs, Third Edition, is an indispensable reference for all students, trainees, and clinicians who care for patients with neurological disorders.

NMS Pathology (National Medical Series for Independent Study)

Detailed yet concise, this book uses a comprehensive outline format and is organized in the way that pathology is taught at most medical schools. New to this edition are: the addition of a transplantation chapter, which covers general immunologic mechanisms and pathologic features of transplant rejection, organ-specific transplantation pathology (kidney, liver, heart, lung, bone marrow), graft-versus host disease, and complications of transplantation; K-type questions have been eliminated and replaced by case-based or clinically oriented questions; and a moderate increase in tables and diagrams, to "break-up" dense outlined text. The NMS outline format provides a logical organization of pathology concepts and eliminates unnecessary words and detail.

USMLE Step 2 Kaplan Lectures - Gynecology

The Gynecology part of USMLE STEP 2 Kaplan Lectures

The USMLE assesses a physician’s ability to apply knowledge, concepts, and principles, and to demonstrate fundamental patient-centered skills, that are important in health and disease and that constitute the basis of safe and effective patient care. Each of the three Steps of the USMLE complements the others; no Step can stand alone in the assessment of readiness for medical licensure. Because individual medical licensing authorities make decisions regarding use of USMLE results, physicians seeking licensure should contact the jurisdiction where they intend to apply for licensure to obtain complete information. Also, the FSMB can provide general information on medical licensure.

UXL Encyclopedia of Diseases and Disorders

The U X L Encyclopedia of Diseases and Disorders is devoted to helping younger students and general readers understand the nature of diseases and disorders of every type, including communicable diseases, genetic disorders, common conditions, and injuries.

This book is a collection of more than 200 entries on diseases, from avian flu, to cystic fibrosis, to warts. The entries start with a definition section and highlight the basic facts of the disease to explain the causes, symptoms, and treatments. Other sections give a more detailed description, talk about demographics, and discuss the future of the disease, for example, if any new treatments are under development or if the disease is becoming more or less prevalent.

The U X L Encyclopedia of Diseases and Disorders uses everyday language when possible, and explains medical terms as they arise. Terms are also defined in Words to Know sidebars within entries, and a collected Words to Know section is included in the beginning of each book. Entries are designed to instruct, challenge, and excite less-experienced students, while providing a solid foundation and reference for students already captivated by medicine.

Writing SOAP Notes - Second Edition

This workbook is intended as a teaching tool to assist with the instruction of documentation. It is focused on the SOAP (subjective, obective, assessment, and plan) format of medical documentation and includes chapters dedicated to each section of the SOAP note in addition to chapters on medical terminology and the use of abbreviations. Each chapter includes several worksheets in addition to the text. This book is intended to function as an instructional aide in teaching documentation using the SOAP note format. This is an area that is time-consuming and is often problematic for students and instructors. Academic clinical faculty and clinical fieldwork educators will find this to be a valuable resource. It is an appropriate guide for students or may serve as a review tool for entry-level therapists. It is also appropriate for use by occupational therapists, physical therapists, or other disciplines that use the SOAP format. Features of this book include worksheets in each chapter to allow practice and that might facilitate out-of-class work by students. Answers to each worksheet are included to reinforce learning. Appendixes on documenting for third-party payers and a summary of SOAP note contents are useful. This is a useful introductory text that would be appropriate for use with undergraduates, fieldwork students, and entry-level therapists. It is formatted in a reader-friendly manner in short but complete chapters. It is highly recommended to both faculty and students.
